Guns exchanged for Crossgates Mall gift cards

ALBANY - Albany County has been running a program this week called Gifts for Guns.

They were giving out gift cards to Crossgates Mall for handguns and assault rifles that were turned in.

Sixteen guns were collected, removed from city streets and will now be turned over to the Albany county sheriff.

“Earlier this week a call came in on our gun tip line, about a loaded 32 with the hammer back in an alley. And we sent people down. Prior to our arrival people must have been talking about the pastor giving out gift cards and that's where the gun came," said Albany County Sheriff-Elect Craig Apple.

Following Friday’s meeting Pastor Charlie of the Victory Church headed to the Albany County Jail where he was handing out holiday gifts to the inmates.

SUV with 6 NYC family members crashes near Albany

BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say six members of a New York City family escaped serious injuries after their sport utility vehicle crashed and overturned on the Thruway outside Albany.

State police say the family's 17-year-old son was driving the Mercedes Benz SUV when it crashed around 1:45 a.m. Friday off the northbound lanes of Interstate 87 in the town of Bethlehem, just south of Albany.

Troopers say a 7-year-old boy sitting unrestrained in a back seat was ejected from the vehicle when it overturned. Police say he suffered cuts and bruises.

His mother and 11-year-old sister also suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police say they're being treated at an Albany hospital.

The three other members of the Queens family weren't injured.

NYers reminded of holiday safety tips

NYers reminded of holiday safety tips

Acting State Fire Administrator Bryant D. Stevens is reminding New Yorkers how to be safe during the holiday season. There is an increased fire risk around the holidays because of improper installation and practices of using decorations around the house.

"Most fires occur because of simple human error," said Stevens in a statement. "Every year during the holidays we unfortunately see an increase in candle-related fires that are simply preventable. Candles add a distinctive aura to this festive season, but treat them with respect. Place candles where they will not be knocked over and extinguish them when you leave the room. Above all, teach your children that they should not play with candles."

Here are some tips to keep you and your loved ones safe over the holidays. For more safety tips and information click here.

NY residents encouraged to give the gift of emergency preparedness

NY residents encouraged to give the gift of emergency preparedness

Federal officials are urging residents of New York to give the gift of emergency preparedness this holiday season.

In the wake of this year’s tropical storms, heavy snows and spring floods, giving those you care about an Emergency Preparedness Kit could help in a time of need.

"A flashlight, a battery-operated radio, a small first aid kit - these are just a few examples of some simple and inexpensive items," said Steven Kuhr state OEM director. "They make good, practical gifts for your loved ones - either under the tree or as stocking stuffers."

Emergency preparedness gifts might include:
