Ruling comes in Black River case

Five area counties may soon have to start paying for Hudson River flood control.

Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Washington and Warren counties were billed millions of dollars after the Hudson River Black River Regulating District lost other sources of money.

An appeals court has ruled the regulating district is entitled to receive money from the five counties, but not as much as it was seeking.

The state has been ordered to contribute as well.

The Northville, Mayfield and Broadalbin Perth school districts have been forced to make cuts as they wait for the dispute to be settled.

Free legal help to be available

More people will be able to find free legal help thanks to a new rule announced today.

New York’s chief judge says new lawyers will now have to provide 50 hours of free legal serves in order to take the state bar exam next year.

New York’s attorney general says the pro bono requirement should help more families stave off mortgage foreclosures.

How to avoid home improvement headaches

RENSSELAER - It's 'song and movement time' at the Ready, Set, Grow Daycare.

"Are we really happy? If you're happy and you know it clap your hands!" says Dominque Smith to the young children who are clapping to the rythm.

Smith and his wife run a home business that had plans to grow itself by adding a new room. But he and his wife said those dreams withered when their contractor stopped showing up.

"It's unfair when you give somebody money in good trust, and they start to do things and they disappear, and you feel heartbroken and you feel like you ultimately, got scammed," Smith said.

He showed NewsChannel what they have to show for the addition they hired the company Mr. B's Construction to build.

"Wood. Footings. Cement. Headache. Frustration," said Smith, pointing to the footings off his deck.

Price Chopper changes Fuel Advantage rules

Price Chopper is making a change to its popular promotion called Fuel Advantage.

Right now customers can save 10 cents a gallon on gasoline for every $50 they spend on groceries.

Beginning Sunday, May 13 they will have to spend $100 on groceries to get the same savings at the gas pump.

Price Chopper officials say there will be other ways for customers to earn fuel rewards in the future.

Sen. Schumer works to keep Post Offices open

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Charles Schumer has introduced an amendment to protect Door to Door postal delivery to rural communities.

The current bill before the senate would have created apartment style mailboxes farther away from homes. Senator Schumer is pushing for the postal service to enact a moratorium for two years on the closure of anymore rural Post Offices.

As written the postal reform bill would have pushed the USPS to stop delivering mail to individual doors and mail boxes and instead install apartment style group boxes where all of the mail for a given street or neighborhood would be delivered.

The area post offices currently on the block are Coeymans Hollow, North Blenheim, South Bethlehem, North Hoosick, and North Hudson.

 

Construction Career Day

GLENMONT - On April 25-26, high school students from around the region will take part in the 11th Annual Capital District Construction Career Day, a two day hands on event designed to introduce youth to the many opportunities available in the construction industry.

The event will be attended my professionals from over 30 local companies, state agencies, and labor organizations.

The construction industry is on the rebound in New York State, and the Governor has recogized the importance of investing in New York's infrastructure which will put people back to work.

The event will be at Tri-Cities Laborers Training Facility in Glenmont.
