Computer expert Addison Osterhout with "Computer Answers" in Albany showed us how easy it is to hack a smart phone.

“The simplest is using a free program that you can download,” Says Osterhout. “Get some tutorials on line and in about 10 minutes you can do it.”

Sure enough in ten minutes Addison was monitoring everything the photographer was doing: if he had been logging onto his bank's website, he would have gotten his passwords, account number, you name it.

It’s called a "Man in the Middle" intercept.

It can happen if you use an unsecured Wi-Fi connection like those found in airports, bus stations and internet cafes.

The thief’s software pretends to be the router you're trying to connect to, he decrypts your data, copies it, re-encrypts it and then sends it on to your bank.

While you were taking care of business, but so was the crook.

Man gets 25 to life for raping 10-year-old

ALBANY - Adam Croote was emotionless in Albany County Court Friday.  His victim's loved ones, however, were the exact opposite as they recounted the horror of the past ten months.  For themselves--but more importantly--for the now 11 year old at the center of this case.

"This little girl he attacked still believed in Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and enjoyed life.   But on June 20th, 2011 Adam Croote left her for dead--beaten and bloody," explained the victim's grandmother during a victim impact statement.

When Croote was babysitting a ten year old girl last summer in the Town of Berne, he violently raped her and then tried to break her neck.  The young victim did not appear in court Friday but she did write a statement.

U.S. Supreme Court denies Porco petition

The U.S. Supreme Court has denied a petition for review from Christopher Porco.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares' office is officially closing their case against Porco.

The former college student from Bethlehem was found guilty in 2006  for the 2004 ax murder of his father and the attempted murder of his mother.

The verdict was affirmed last year by the state Court of Appeals.

“This defendant was found guilty after jury trial, and this case has been affirmed by both the Appellate Division and the New York State Court of Appeals," Soares said in a statement. "The US Supreme Court declining to hear this case clearly shows that the evidence against this defendant was overwhelming and proved his guilt beyond any reasonable doubt, after a fair trial.”

Porco is serving a sentence of 46 years to life.

Bethlehem man found guilty of rape

A Bethlehem man was found guilty on multiple counts including counts of rape after a jury trial in Albany County Court Wednesday.

According to Albany County District Attorney David Soares, 50-year-old Vincent Cassala is accused of engaging in criminal sexual activity with a girl who was 15 years old at the time.

Cassala was found guilty of one count of attempted rape, two counts of criminal sexual act in the first degree, two counts of criminal sexual act in the third degree, one count of attempted rape third degree and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

“This offender was held accountable by the guilty verdicts returned today and now the victim can begin the journey from victim to survivor,” said Soares.

Cassala was taken to the Albany County Jail and faces up to 65 years in state prison when he is sentenced May 16.

Most of the stolen items have been found.

Guard member arrested for scamming money

COLONIE - A New York National Guard member is accused of using his status to scam people out of money.

Police say Robert Conde dressed in uniform, and then went door to door in Bethlehem and Colonie, asking for money to support troops.

According to police, the only troop he was supporting was himself. Police have investigated six complaints against Conde.

They’re asking anyone else who thinks they've been victimized by him, to give them a call.

Hindu center warns Indian-Americans about burglaries

A Hindu cultural center in the Capital Region is calling attention to a crime spree seemingly singling out members of the community from India.

Community members are working hand in hand with police now.

Two break ins at Latham-area homes belonging to Indian-American families and similar incidents in Clifton Park and Delmar leads the community to believe that they are being targeted. Ram Lalukota thinks that gold reaching record high prices this year could be one of the causes of Indian homes being targeted for their expensive jewelry.

Greg Jensen of the Colonie Police Department says they have no information yet that shows the local Indian-American population is at a particularly higher risk than others. He says there have been several other burglaries in Colonie where the victims were not Indian.
