Bethlehem Public Library appoints new director

Bethlehem Public Library appoints new director

The Bethlehem Public Library has appointed Geoffrey Kirkpatrick as an interim director.  Kirkpatrick will follow Nancy Pieri who retired this past April.

Kirkpatrick was appointed to the position after a three-month search and interview process which is required by the Albany County Civil Service.  The new director has an 11-year tenure with the Library and has held the positions of assistant director from 2009-2011 and head of the technical services departments from 2000-2009.

According to the Library’s website Kirkpatrick said, “I look forward to working with the community, trustees and staff to provide the highest quality library service. Bethlehem Public Library has a well- deserved reputation for excellence, and I am excited to be part of it.”

Kirkpatrick also holds a Master of Library Science degree from UAlbany and is a member of the New York Library Association where he holds the position of president of the Public Library Section.

Alive at Five line up announced

ALBANY, NY - Mayor Jerry Jennings and the City of Albany have announced the musical line up for the 2011 Alive at Five Concert Series.

These concerts are presented free and open to the public on Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Albany Riverfront Park amphitheatre at the Corning Preserve

Area scholars hold discussion on Egypt

Bethlehem Public Library is hosting a talk entitled Resetting US – Middle East Relations: New Policies For a New Era.

Two area scholars, Robert R. Gosende and James Ketterer, will be discussing the protests in Egypt’s Tahrir Square and the considerations of the structure of US policy in the Middle East.

Gosende is a retired Foreign Service officer who now serves as the John W. Ryan Fellow in International Education at the University at Albany.  Ketterer is Vice Chancellor for Policy and Planning at SUNY. 

The discussion, free and open to the public, is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10.

The library is located at 451 Delmar Avenue in Delmar.

The event is being sponsored by International Center of the Capital Region.

State parks begin rental reservations

State parks begin rental reservations

There might still be snow on the ground but that won't stop J. B. Thacher State Park and other Capital District State Parks from planning for the upcoming summer season. State Park facilities are taking reservations now for picnic pavilions and tent rentals.

State Park facilities are taking reservations now for picnic pavilions and tent rentals.  Because the demand is so high, many of the parks reservations are handled using a lottery system. 

The pavilions are great for family events, weddings, parties, picnics, business or organizational outings. Those interested are encouraged to make their reservation early.  The parks feature a full range of amenities from small private tents in secluded settings to large 200-person picnic pavilions with adjacent restrooms, recreational facilities, and parking.

Prices range from $50 to $200.  Inquiries should be made directly to the park or site.

Library holds poetry writers support group

Library holds poetry writers support group

The Friends of Voorheesville Library are holding an adult poetry writers support group.

The event is every other Thursday at the Voorheesville Public Library.

Writers are encouraged to bring their own work for critique.

Hay day Sunday

The Town of Bethlehem Parks and Recreation Departement is holding it's 20th Annual Halloween Hay Day on Sunday.

All are invited from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for hayrides, games, balloons, face painting, trick or treat bag decorating and much more at the Elm Avenue Warming area.
